Chapter Nine
âBut, why me?â Mel almost wailed. âIâm obviously not a Knight, and Iâm certainly not a Tresor.â
Gwen looked at his flushed face. âWhy are you so sure? It makes perfect sense to me.â
Lucan leaned forward and opened his mouth. Gwen flashed him a warning look. Mel didnât need anyone stating the obvious. She looked around the room. It was quite funny really. Theyâd lived with the boy for four years and it took a comparative stranger to point out Melâs sexuality?
Gwen shook her head at the dawning acknowledgement on four faces. Men, huh. Gawain huffed. âBut thatâs impossible.â
Mel looked up angrily. âWhy Gawain? Why is that so impossible? You made me a pink amulet for Godâs sake. You knew what I did before I came here.â
âBut that.â Gawain broke off and looked around for support. âBut I didnât mean anything. I was joking. I didnât know youâ¦aw, hell Mel. Iâm sorry. I donât care. I mean, it doesnât bother meââ
Gwen smiled and put out a supportive hand to the shocked boy. She glanced at Lance. âThis isnât for me to say, but if Melâs safer here, maybe someone should reconsider the evening classes and the job.â
Mel seemed to calm down at Gwenâs words. âI can easily skip the classes. Itâs nearly the end of the semester and Iâve got the credits.â He looked stubbornly at Lance. âBut Iâm not giving my job up. Iâm only needed for three more weeks while the campus empties for summer vacation. If I let Mr. Maloney down, I wonât get the job back next year.â
âAll right. Keep the job for now,â said Lance. âBut, if it puts any of the other students in danger, you have to pull out. Weâll monitor how much a focus you are.â
âThey canât be that clever,â murmured Gwen. âThey didnât know he wasnât at his late class the other night. He stayed here to help me.â
Lance nodded. âIt will be his scent signature.â
âSo, me not being there may not make a difference?â Mel asked eagerly.
Lance smiled. âLike, I said, weâll monitor it. You will always have one of us there.â Lanceâs eyebrows raised and the protestations died on Melâs lips. Mel nodded.
Glancing at the clock, it was nearing two AM, and Lance said, âBed. Iâll monitor for the next couple of hours to make sure there isnât going to be anything else.â He looked at Mel. âMake sure one of us knows when you leave for class tomorrow afternoon.â
Gwen turned from putting the leftovers in the fridge. Not that there was a lot though, she considered wryly. She winced again at what must have been a huge grocery bill. When everyone trooped out, she was pleased to see Kay drop a supportive arm on Melâs shoulders. Gawain headed over to him, too, and mumbled something to the boy. Gawain grinned when Mel smiled and called him a geek.
She turned and came face to face with Lance. âYou need to stop creeping up on people.â
âYou need to stop looking so tempting so people wonât want to.
