Chapter Nine

“But, why me?” Mel almost wailed. “I’m obviously not a Knight, and I’m certainly not a Tresor.”

Gwen looked at his flushed face. “Why are you so sure? It makes perfect sense to me.”

Lucan leaned forward and opened his mouth. Gwen flashed him a warning look. Mel didn’t need anyone stating the obvious. She looked around the room. It was quite funny really. They’d lived with the boy for four years and it took a comparative stranger to point out Mel’s sexuality?

Gwen shook her head at the dawning acknowledgement on four faces. Men, huh. Gawain huffed. “But that’s impossible.”

Mel looked up angrily. “Why Gawain? Why is that so impossible? You made me a pink amulet for God’s sake. You knew what I did before I came here.”

“But that.” Gawain broke off and looked around for support. “But I didn’t mean anything. I was joking. I didn’t know you…aw, hell Mel. I’m sorry. I don’t care. I mean, it doesn’t bother me—”

Gwen smiled and put out a supportive hand to the shocked boy. She glanced at Lance. “This isn’t for me to say, but if Mel’s safer here, maybe someone should reconsider the evening classes and the job.”

Mel seemed to calm down at Gwen’s words. “I can easily skip the classes. It’s nearly the end of the semester and I’ve got the credits.” He looked stubbornly at Lance. “But I’m not giving my job up. I’m only needed for three more weeks while the campus empties for summer vacation. If I let Mr. Maloney down, I won’t get the job back next year.”

“All right. Keep the job for now,” said Lance. “But, if it puts any of the other students in danger, you have to pull out. We’ll monitor how much a focus you are.”

“They can’t be that clever,” murmured Gwen. “They didn’t know he wasn’t at his late class the other night. He stayed here to help me.”

Lance nodded. “It will be his scent signature.”

“So, me not being there may not make a difference?” Mel asked eagerly.

Lance smiled. “Like, I said, we’ll monitor it. You will always have one of us there.” Lance’s eyebrows raised and the protestations died on Mel’s lips. Mel nodded.

Glancing at the clock, it was nearing two AM, and Lance said, “Bed. I’ll monitor for the next couple of hours to make sure there isn’t going to be anything else.” He looked at Mel. “Make sure one of us knows when you leave for class tomorrow afternoon.”

Gwen turned from putting the leftovers in the fridge. Not that there was a lot though, she considered wryly. She winced again at what must have been a huge grocery bill. When everyone trooped out, she was pleased to see Kay drop a supportive arm on Mel’s shoulders. Gawain headed over to him, too, and mumbled something to the boy. Gawain grinned when Mel smiled and called him a geek.

She turned and came face to face with Lance. “You need to stop creeping up on people.”

“You need to stop looking so tempting so people won’t want to.
